In the first edition, he descends beneath the waves at night and uses cutting-edge technology to generate computer scans of the sea floor. He also learns about a complex community of animals, as well as the annual coral spawning, which is responsible for the great diversity in the reef.

Using the latest technology, the naturalist explores the shark-infested waters of Osprey Reef in the Triton submersible, before returning to the nesting grounds of the Green Sea Turtle, 60 years after his first visit to Raine Island. He also marvels at manta ray cleaning stations on Lady Elliot Island, and tracks dwarf minke whales to discover their surprising reasons for returning, and why the reef is vital for their survival.

The naturalist examines what the next few decades may hold for this remarkable ecosystem, and looks at the work of scientists who are trying to preserve the area and the species that inhabit it, assisted by research vessel the Alucia. He also embarks on an ambitious attempt to dive further into the reef than ever before to witness the resilient coral that live down in the depths and see if they hold answers that may help to overcome challenges that lie ahead, as the impact of humans on the reef continues to take its toll.
