In 2007, the club was facing relegation from the Championship as well as financial ruin, before being bought by F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone and Italian businessman Flavio Briatore. Soon after, they were joined on the board by Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, and together the new owners promised a return to glory for the club and its supporters.
